Michael Hosaluk

Michael Hosaluk has a strong love for the materials that he uses. He is internationally known as one of the today’s most creative wood turners. His work includes functional vessels, furniture and sculpture. In his woodworking, Michael uses the beauty and mystery of the material as well as inventing new techniques and to create his objects. He likes to have the materials he uses to relate back to the piece he is making. For example, he may have a salvaged piece of wood which he chooses to work with and uses this as the starting point for his design. At other times he starts with a design and then chooses what type of wood he will need for that particular purpose. He can apply a variety of surface design techniques to express an idea. In his work he wants to tell a story of life… of the places, people, and environment around him. He feels that craft goes beyond the pleasure of our senses and deals not only with aesthetics, but social and ideological lives.
