Nerdrum hails from Oslo, Norway. He practices painting in the method of Rembrandt with contemporary twist of subject matter. Representations are of figures in various desolate environments that evoke a spiritual connection to nature and post apocalyptic strife. Uses symbols and numbers to create connections with a painting and provide clues to ritualistic undertones. Nerdrum placed himself in complete opposition to Modernism and refused to follow developing trends. Obstinate, crazy, and very intelligent, he had declared himself as King of Kitsch. I wonder how Damien Hurst or Jeff Koons feel about him owning this title. Nerdrum continued to push painting into new directions with contemporary themes at a time when painting was being declared as dead. His ideas are rooted in Humanist theory.
