W. Eugene Smith

W. Eugene Smith was a documentarian and Photojournalist who is famous for his work in Life Magazine during WWII. Smiths' work at the time was not regarded as anything more than the work of a Photojournalist. After the war he set out to capture America. He was awarded the Guggenheim Fellowship award (his first of three) and came to Pittsburgh to capture one of America's leading industrial cities on film. Though the complete work was never published there are a few that have influenced my father and I in the ideas of the beautiful tonal qualities of everyday life. His standards in craftsmanship of the negative and print have set the guideposts for all who venture into his realm of the black and white photo and he continues to inspire others who are still dedicated to wet work photography.
