Ahlam Shibli, (1970-) Palestinian artist

In an important part of Ahlam Shibli’s photographic work, the artist takes her central theme the definition of home; mainly through the everyday living conditions of the Palestinian people. Shibli’s work stems from the tradition of photographers who have documented the life of the Palestinian people since the late 19th century. Her photographs depict unfinished houses, densely built areas dotted with satellite dishes, deserted plains, concrete rubble—and nowhere is home. Black and white archival photographs from Palestinian families are shown, like portable memorials to time past.
