Robert Arneson

Robert Arneson started his art life as a draftsman and cartoon creator for a local paper in Benicia, CA.  His satirical work in clay certainly has its roots in the subject matter of the funny pages.  Arneson sculpted large busts, suburban landscapes, and political figures.  He was influenced by the expressionist, and clay artist, Peter Voulkos.  Arneson shed the stereotype of clay for utilitarian uses.  Some of his most famous works were self portraits which he used to comment on universal issues.  His work was in the movement of Pop Art which lent ideas of mass cultural and technological issues.  Arneson’s work is a testament to the idea that clay is a universal material and it is to be used by all.
