Ursula von Rydingsvard

Ursula Rydingsvard creates, often massive, wooden structures/sculptures out of cedar wood. These works are intricately assembled on a intimidating scale. I have seen the works up close and they loom over a viewer. The viewer must wonder many things including the logistics of installation. each piece cut and placed and glued and carved. The number of pieces that make up the whole creates a puzzle for the eye. the carved surfaces are curved and organic where as the pieces are also square, a combination of architecturally influenced lines and strong characteristics of nature adds a layer of conflict to the surface. The cedar also creates an olfactory experience. The smells of cedar can be powerful and can trigger memories of all kinds. Worth looking at everyone...

There is a trio of sculpture in an outdoor garden in Kansas city, the roughness of the forms and the exterior setting allows for a wonderful play of light as the sun changes angles and the slow deterioration of the wood is beautiful. -mike
